The Reality
Drink spiking is a terrifying reality in Aotearoa New Zealand, yet it remains one of our most underreported crimes.
If it feels like no one truly knows how common drink spiking is, that’s because the real scale is incredibly difficult to measure.
NZ Police has acknowledged that drink spiking likely happens far more often than official figures show. Because incidents aren’t recorded as a standalone offence, they’re often grouped under broader categories such as administering a harmful substance or sexual assault.
The gap between experience and convictions is huge. Student-led surveys — including research published by Otago’s Critic Te Ārohi — suggest a significant number of young people have experienced drink spiking. Yet only a small number of convictions linked specifically to drink spiking are recorded each year.
Reporting can feel difficult and overwhelming. Many substances leave the body within hours, making testing time sensitive. Combined with the shock and vulnerability people often experience afterwards, many incidents never get formally reported.

The Stickers
Sip Safe Co. stickers are single-use, eco-friendly, recyclable covers that seal over the top of a glass or cup.
A small pre-cut hole allows a straw to be pushed through, so drinks can be enjoyed normally while the cover stays securely in place. They don’t leave a residue on glasses.
The stickers are designed to be tamper-evident — if someone has interfered with your drink, it shows. That visible layer of protection is what makes them effective, and what makes them easy to use in busy, real-world environments like bars, festivals, and campus events.
